Los Angeles, USA — March 27th, 2007— PhoXtal Communications AB, developer of integrated optical components for communications networks demonstrates its Monolithically Integrated FTTH Diplexer Array at this year’s OFC Conference in Anaheim, California.
PhoXtal’s FTTH Diplexer Arrays combine 4, 8 or 12 diplexers in the same chip.
Single-step low-cost fabrication
The Diplexer Array is based on PhoXtal’s fabrication method for 1310/(1490)/1550 bidirectional diplexers (triplexers) where transmitters, receivers and wavelength selective couplers are integrated into one InP (Indium Phosphide) device. The fabrication cost is reduced by using a single epitaxial growth layer. In each diplexer, WDM functionality is achieved with a coupler designed for a large optical bandwidth, the laser by forming a DFB emitting directly into the waveguides, and standard receivers consisting of WG-PD (Waveguide Photo Diodes) implemented in the waveguides. A Diplexer Array with 250 μm fiber attachment spacing is achieved with a selected number of parallel diplexers on the same chip.
Dramatic improvements in port density
PhoXtal’s Diplexer Arrays are intended to be implemented in QSFP (Quad (4-channel) Small Form factor Pluggable, www.qsfpmsa.org) packages. By connecting MPO-connectorized fiber arrays in a point-to-point FTTH installation directly into the central office equipment, the port density of the equipment can be increased by a factor of three or more.
