Applied Optoelectronics, Inc., a manufacturer of laser diodes, photodetectors, and optical modules for fiber optic communications systems, today has announced optical modules for Passive Optical Networks (PONs).

AOI is offering bi-directional and tri-port optical blocks for Gigabit-PON (G-PON) and Ethernet PON (E-PON) applications. These optical blocks incorporate the company’s laser diodes and photodiodes along with an integrated wavelength division multiplexers (WDMs) to enable full-duplex communications over a single optical fiber.

Both types of modules are offered in a variety of configurations depending on the optical link budget required.

They are offered with both Fabry-Perot (FP) and Distributed Feedback (DFB) type laser diodes. Several options for photodetectors are also available.

The G-PON style optical blocks support downstream bit rates up to 2.488 Gbps and upstream rates of 1.25 Gbps. Both OLT and ONU style devices are available.

Both OLT and ONT style devices feature single-fiber output and the wavelength-separation components necessary to allow full-duplex communication over a single fiber using WDM.
